Things to Consider When Choosing a Technology Partner /249
Over the past two decades, Vietnam has risen to become one of the most attractive IT outsourcing destinations in the Asia–Pacific region. With an abundant talent pool, competitive costs, and increasingly advanced technical capabilities, many Vietnamese software companies have conquered global markets, from Japan and the U.S. to Europe.
The reality is that being an established firm does not necessarily guarantee value for customers. We have seen younger companies rise strongly by leveraging the advantages of the Internet rather than relying solely on relationships and streamlined operating processes, including Rikkeisoft, Savvycom, and others. A common trait among these younger enterprises is their commitment to digital transformation for themselves before implementing it for their clients.
The “Traditional Giants” (founded in the 1990s–2000s)
1. FPT Software (1999)
- Strengths: 54,000+ employees, revenue of ~$2.47 billion (2024), partnerships with Fortune 500, multi-domain capabilities (AI, cloud, RPA, etc.). Large branches spread worldwide from the U.S. to Japan and Europe.
- Weaknesses: Internal competition, large structure, bureaucratic slowdown, reflected in workplace culture reviews. Modern processes but underutilized, leading to resource waste despite strong and consistent revenue growth. Since it has to handle multiple projects simultaneously, the company does not have the advantages of a boutique agency, unlike firms that have a specialized focus in a particular domain (e.g., FinTech).
2. TMA Solutions (1997)
- Strengths: 4,000+ engineers, CMMi Level 5, global presence (Canada, U.S., Germany, Japan…), strong in IoT/Big Data.
- Weaknesses: Growth plateau due to market maturity; competes with FPT in large client base. Similar to FPT, this first-generation company also exhibits the typical challenges of a large outsourcing firm, with a massive system of standardized processes that make it difficult to be as flexible as smaller enterprises.
3. CMC Global (part of CMC Group 1993, subsidiary 2017)
- Strengths: Specializes in Cloud, AI, RPA; multiple Sao Khue awards; 3,500+ engineers; “Best in Asia” award.
- Weaknesses: Founded late (2017), still young in globalization mindset. Though part of an established group, this unit is relatively new in software export outsourcing.
4. NashTech (Harvey Nash) (2000)
- Strengths: 1,600+ engineers in Vietnam; software outsourcing arm of a global group; many large clients.
- Weaknesses: Cross-cultural integration sometimes mismatches with the Vietnamese engineering workforce. The predecessor, "Havey Nash," although one of the long-established foreign companies, has yet to make a significant mark in sustainable development strategies. Its management processes remain quite biased, and it is not widely known both domestically and internationally.
5. KMS Technology (~2010)
- Strengths: 10+ years, multiple Sao Khue awards, strong in QA/Testing, DevOps & Agile, focus on startups and SMEs.
- Weaknesses: More localized client base than global; weaker international presence compared to other giants.
The “Middle-aged Players” (2000s–2010s)
6. Orient Software (2005)
- Strengths: 350+ staff specializing in AI/ML/IoT, ISO-certified, Microsoft Gold partner, high-quality projects.
- Weaknesses: Smaller scale; often categorized as a boutique outsourcing vendor.
7. Axon Active (2008)
- Strengths: 600+ engineers, Swiss-owned, strong in Agile/Scrum and dedicated team model, stable long-term partnerships.
- Weaknesses: Limited domestic market penetration; focus mainly on EU.
8. Savvycom (2009)
- Strengths: 700 engineers, SaaS–fintech–healthcare, Sao Khue and Asia B2B awards.
- Weaknesses: Strong in solutions but lacks breakthrough in global brand recognition.
9. Rikkeisoft (2012)
- Strengths: AI + blockchain, serving startups & fintech, focus on niche projects.
- Weaknesses: Medium scale, low brand awareness.
10. S3Corp (2007)
- Strengths: QA/testing, product verification, 200+ engineers, solid international portfolio.
- Weaknesses: Limited promotion, narrow specialization.
“Deep-Tech & New Niche Players” (2010–2015)
11. Varmeta (2022)
- Strengths: Specializes in Blockchain, AI, and AR/VR, supported by 100+ engineers and PhD experts in blockchain architecture and data intelligence. Strategic partner of the Hedera Foundation in Southeast Asia and collaborator with Solana, Aptos, and Cardano to advance Web3 adoption and infrastructure.
Recognized for the Unreal SDK for Solana (featured in Solana docs) and projects with KLDX, Bitkub, and Ubisoft, delivering scalable, enterprise-grade solutions.
- Weaknesses: As an emerging firm with rapid expansion, Varmeta faces the common scaling challenges of young tech companies, balancing resource allocation, team maturity, and global brand recognition while maintaining innovation velocity.
The company’s diversified focus (Blockchain, AI, and AR/VR) may also require sharper prioritization as it continues to scale across multiple markets.
12. SotaTek (2015)
- Strengths: 1,200+ engineers, blockchain, IoT, AI, global offices, multiple blockchain awards.
- Weaknesses: Highly competitive space, hard to expand into traditional outsourcing; lacks enterprise-level project governance.
13. fram^ (2013)
- Strengths: Sweden + Vietnam, ~150 staff, blends European expertise with cost efficiency.
- Weaknesses: Few clients outside the EU.
14. Starack (~2015)
- Strengths: Agile, custom software, AI, mobile, startup-focused, flexible.
- Weaknesses: New player, limited brand visibility.
15. Groove Technology (~2015)
- Strengths: Web, mobile, enterprise, Agile, consulting, serves SMEs.
- Weaknesses: Limited scale.
16. SmartOSC (~2009)
- Strengths: 500+ clients, expertise in Magento/Sitecore/Adobe, strong UI/UX & e-commerce.
- Weaknesses: Overly focused on e-commerce, harder to diversify.
“Tech Startups & Boutique Agencies” (2010–2020)
17. Levinci
- Strengths: Custom software, dedicated dev teams, consulting.
- Weaknesses: Few international certifications.
18. AHT Tech JSC (Arrowhitech) (2007)
- Strengths: Web/mobile, UX, digital presence.
- Weaknesses: Limited global client acquisition.
19. MLTech Soft
- Strengths: Digital transformation, hardware + software, design thinking.
- Weaknesses: Small scale, weak scalability.
20. Unitech
- Strengths: Government, blockchain, AI, cloud; serves judiciary, gov, and enterprise sectors.
- Weaknesses: Limited international presence.
21. Innotech / Innomize Tech (~2018)
- Strengths: Cloud, AI, custom consulting; disruptive for SMEs.
- Weaknesses: Small, young, weak branding.
“IPO Firms & Hybrid Models”
22. Sara Vietnam (2002)
- Strengths: Long-standing, combines software, training, media, publishing; listed with stable capital.
- Weaknesses: Diversified business model, not specialized in pure outsourcing.
23. Appota Corporation (2011)
- Strengths: Gaming, mobile, fintech, IoT, cloud, SaaS, digital content.
- Weaknesses: Not focused on outsourcing external clients.
24. Pentalog Vietnam (~1994)
- Strengths: French-owned, Agile, nearshore outsourcing, global delivery platform.
- Weaknesses: Weaker brand presence in Vietnam.
Other Notable Names
25. VTI
- Strengths: AI, IoT, cybersecurity; strong Japanese & Southeast Asian clients.
- Weaknesses: Scalability in U.S./EU uncertain.
26. ELCA Vietnam
