In Vietnamese folklore, there is a short, deceptively simple saying: “Clear water has no fish”.
At first glance, it sounds almost counterintuitive. Clean water should be good for life. And yet, in nature, ecosystems that are too sterile often fail to sustain it. Fish thrive not in crystal purity, but in water with sediment, nutrients, and complexity.
While deeply embedded in Vietnamese culture, this proverb actually originates from ancient China, first recorded in the Han Dynasty text Dai De Li Ji (大戴禮記) as “Shuǐ zhì qīng zé wú yú” (水至清則無魚). It was originally used by Confucian scholars to advise leaders that just as fish cannot survive in water that is too pure to hold nutrients, a ruler who is overly strict or demanding of absolute perfection will eventually find themselves without followers or allies.
Today, this saying serves as a timeless piece of wisdom regarding human nature and tolerance. It suggests that being "too clear"-or overly critical and rigid-creates an inhospitable environment for others. By acknowledging its roots in the “Records of Ritual,” we see how this biological metaphor has evolved from a sophisticated principle of governance into a popular folk idiom, reminding us that a little imperfection is often necessary for life and relationships to flourish.
This folk observation turns out to be a powerful metaphor for some of the deepest failures in modern management-and increasingly, in artificial intelligence systems.
The Illusion of Clean Systems
Modern organizations are obsessed with clarity:
- Clean dashboards
- Precise KPIs
- Standardized behaviors
- Rule-based compliance
In management language, “clean” means predictable, measurable, and controllable.
But just as in nature, systems optimized for purity often lose their capacity to support life.
- Employees stop taking risks.
- Teams stop speaking honestly.
- Organizations stop learning.
What remains looks efficient-but is hollow.
When Management Becomes Sterile
From Control to Compliance
Traditional management models-rooted in Taylorism and industrial efficiency-assume that performance improves as variance decreases. Errors are treated as waste. Deviations are problems to be eliminated.
