Struggling to Find Work at an Older Age: What Path for Seasoned IT Professionals?
For IT professionals over 40 with a wealth of experience and knowledge, there are several avenues to consider for continuing career development and achieving sustainable success, especially in the fields of IT and project management.
With over 20 years of experience in IT, you have a wealth of expertise and qualifications, yet it can feel challenging to find opportunities at this stage, especially in a field that constantly seeks the latest trends and youth. Many companies hesitate to hire older professionals, particularly in tech, where fresh skills and adaptability to new systems are prized. You’ve even built your own company and secured some clients, but growth has been limited due to constraints on funding and networking. While it’s hard to say if this issue is as prevalent in the U.S., in developing countries, where the labor market for tech outsourcing is still promising, older professionals can face similar difficulties when seeking new job roles or pivoting their business for income.
Below are some suggestions that may help professionals over 40:
1. Consider a Career in Consulting or Teaching
- With over two decades of IT and project management experience, shifting toward consulting or teaching could be an option. Many young companies and developing organizations need someone who can set up and streamline systems with tried-and-tested processes.
- Consulting not only offers stable income but also alleviates the pressure to stay updated on every new technology that companies typically expect.
2. Build a Personal Brand and Specialize
- Rather than focusing solely on the competitive job market, shift your attention to building a personal brand online. Blogging, creating videos, or participating in professional forums can help reinforce your name in the field.
- You could specialize in a particular niche within IT where your experience stands out, such as risk management, data security, or digital transformation consulting. This kind of specialization can give you an edge when seeking collaboration opportunities.
3. Tap Into International Networks and Professional Platforms
- Look into international markets such as the U.S., Australia, or Europe. Platforms like Upwork, LinkedIn, and TopTal offer numerous remote opportunities where experience and self-management skills are highly valued.
- Joining international communities could also introduce you to new contacts, possibly opening doors in different markets.
4. Diversify Your Company’s Services and Business Models
- Leveraging your current company, consider expanding your services to include training, small business support in setting up procedures, or strategic consulting.
- You may want to look for a business partner or investor to help with capital needs and take the company to the next level. Try connecting with investors or industry peers through tech events or international conferences.
- Since there may still be potential in the outsourcing market, you could look into developing higher-value services, like custom software development or specialized tech solutions for industries with high demand.
5. Keep Learning and Adapting
- You already have a strong foundation in project management and IT, but in a fast-paced industry, it’s beneficial to stay updated on some emerging areas, such as AI, data science, or cloud computing.
- Selectively learning new topics and focusing only on those most relevant to your goals will make this process more manageable and productive.
6. Join Career and Business Support Communities for Older Professionals
- In developed countries, experienced professionals are often valued as advisors or consultants. Communities and organizations, such as Encore.org or AARP in the U.S., connect experienced professionals with career opportunities.
- While these organizations primarily operate in the U.S., similar communities can be found online or on LinkedIn. Even connecting with them could inspire you to explore comparable opportunities in Vietnam or other countries.
While transitions at this stage can be challenging, use your extensive experience and connections to carve out a sustainable and meaningful career path. Trying out various options can help you find the most suitable direction. Best of luck!
